Scottish Arts Council Goes West... South by South West

09/02/2010

The Scottish Arts Council, in partnership with PCL Presents and DF Concerts, is co-ordinating two Showcasing Scotland events and the Scottish presence at South by South West, one of the world’s largest music industry festivals which runs from 17-21 March 2010 in Austin, Texas.

On Wednesday 17 March, six bands will showcase their talents as part of an official South by South West showcase. Performing to an audience of music bookers, record labels, publishing companies, booking agents, industry press and musicians from across the world will be; Hudson Mohawk, Frightened Rabbit, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Codeine Velvet Club, Unicorn Kid and Tommy Reilly. Each performing a unique set, the show will provide a taste of Scotland’s emerging musical talent.

A further five Scottish bands will head the stage at an official party at the British Music Embassy on Friday 19 March. Broken Records, Twin Atlantic, Young Fathers, Fangs and The Law will all perform to hundreds of conference delegates.

In addition to the co-ordination of live performances, the Scottish Arts Council supports individual artists and bands to attend the annual festival, allowing them the access and opportunity to meet and network with other artists, international promoters, record companies and booking agents. This year, nine bands have received funding from the Scottish Arts Council to attend this year’s conference and festival;

  • Broken Records
  • Colin MacIntyre
  • Fangs
  • Frightened Rabbit
  • The Law
  • St Deluxe
  • Trembling Bells
  • Unicorn Kid
  • Young Fathers

Ian Smith, Head of Music, Scottish Arts Council said:
“The Scottish presence at South by South West continues to build year on year. This year 22 bands were invited, more than ever before. The effect of this attention can be felt at home through the international success of Scottish bands such as Frightened Rabbit, Camera Obscura and Twilight Sad, who have all benefited from past South by South West conferences. By helping emerging and established artists attend, we are not only supporting individual artists at a crucial point in their careers, but we are also successfully promoting Scottish talent worldwide across all musical genres. We look forward to seeing these bands continue to flourish in the international arena and wish them every success.”

In 2009 there were over 13,000 industry delegates seeing 2,000 bands and artists on 88 stages over five days at South by South West (SxSW). The Showcasing Scotland events witnessed performances from Primal Scream, Glasvegas, The Proclaimers and Camera Obscura showcasing alongside Dananananaykroyd, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Found, Twin Atlantic, My Latest Novel, Come on Gang! and The Pictish Trail. The music event has grown from 700 registrants in 1987 to nearly 12,000 registrants.
