Your Sound amplifed with boost from Scottish Arts Council

02/06/2008

King Tuts Wah Wah Hut’s unsigned initiative, Your Sound, has been awarded funding from the Scottish Arts Council's Youth Music Initiative following its substantial efforts to support Scotland’s top emerging musical talent.

The funding reflects the Youth Music Initiative’s commitment to supporting independent music making among young people and will be used to enhance current Your Sound activity with plans including the Your Sound Bandstand at Hydro Connect, a Scotland wide Your Sound Tour, the release of a Your Sound album plus the launch of the Your Sound Academy.

The twenty lucky acts who have been chosen to play the Your Sound Bandstand at Hydro Connect (Inveraray Castle, 29 – 31st August) were announced on Sunday 1st June at King Tut’s by Your Sound supporter and Radio 1 DJ Vic Galloway. Details of the bands are below.

Music leads The tour, aptly titled: Your Sound, Your Place will see the initiative visit various locations across Scotland providing young people interested in all aspects of the music industry with the opportunity to network and speak to industry specialists as well as hearing some great new music.

An album featuring top Your Sound artists will also be widely distributed, not only into the public domain but also to labels, agents and managers in an effort to bring as much exposure as possible to key acts from the last three and the upcoming term 4.

Term 4 of Your Sound, which will run from October 2008 – May 2009, will see the Your Sound Academy run from 2pm-4pm pre the regular Sunday event.  The Academy will run themed seminars which will focus on education and increasing the knowledge base of young people interested in proceeding with their musical ambitions.  There will be a specific topic chosen each month, relevant to the development of unsigned and independent artists, with guest speakers shedding light on their specialty.  As always, throughout Term 4 industry specialists will be at Your Sound every month offering their invaluable advice.
In addition, two bands chosen to play the Your Sound Bandstand at Hydro Connect will also be selected to play Edinburgh Liquid Room as part of the brand new Edge festival in August.

Fiona Rosie of DF Concerts said: 'We’re delighted to have been awarded this grant to help develop Your Sound and it’s great to be given the chance to reach yet more of Scotland’s amazing emerging talent and widen the Your Sound offer. We’re looking forward to planning the new strands of Your Sound and taking the initiative on tour. There is currently a wealth of independent talent in Scotland and it’s an incredibly exciting time to be involved in the country’s music industry'.

David McDonald, Youth Music Manager at the Scottish Arts Council added:  'The Scottish Arts Council’s Youth Music Initiative is delighted to support the expansion of the Your Sound initiative which will support young bands’ progression by providing opportunities for them to engage with the professional music industry and gain vital touring and performance experience.

'The partnership with King Tut’s is just one of the schemes that the Youth Music Initiative is currently developing as part of its commitment to providing quality independent music making opportunities for young people across Scotland.'

Notes to editors

  1. Taking place on the first Sunday of the month Your Sound is a networking opportunity for artists, band managers, budding promoters, A&R, and anyone generally involved in new and developing music projects. Your Sound allows artists to have their music heard by industry professionals; the opportunity to network with other bands, music lovers and industry bods alike.
Your Sound has helped hundreds of bands since its inception in 2005. Starting off as a university project for one member of the King Tuts staff, Your Sound has gone on to champion the likes of We are Physics, Attic Lights, The Twilight Sad and The Dykeenies.
  2. For bands and artists to be in with a chance of being playlisted, becoming a future Artist of the Month, simply log onto www.kingtuts.co.uk, click on the Your Sound logo, go to the 'Get Involved' section to download an application form, and submit this along with a CD to: Your Sound, 272 St Vincent Street, Glasgow, G2 5RL. 3. The Scottish Arts Council is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) which was established by Royal Charter in 1994 and is also a Lottery distributor. The organisation serves the people of Scotland by fostering arts of excellence through investment, development, research and advocacy. Our corporate aims are: to support artists to fulfil their creative and business potential; to increase participation in the arts; and to place the arts, culture and creativity at the heart of learning. We invest £60m each year, including £15 million of National Lottery funding. For more information visit: www.scottisharts.org.uk
  4. The Youth Music Initiative (YMI) was established in 2003 to put music at the heart of young people’s lives and learning. By March 2011 a significant £66.9 million will have been invested in music programmes by the Scottish Government. Amongst its key achievements are that children now have access to one year’s free music tuition by the time they reach Primary 6, as well as increased opportunities for out of school hours participation providing Scotland’s young people with the opportunity to develop musical skills and appreciation and experience the personal, social and educational benefits that accompany these activities.
