Aberdeen Jazz Festival 2006
8 - 12 March 2006
Aberdeen Jazz Festival 2006 The programme History and background
 |
 |
The third annual Aberdeen Jazz Festival is set to kick off on 8 March 2006 with more performances, more venues and the very best local, national and international jazz acts.
In addition, instrumental workshops for younger musicians will ensure that there is something for everyone at this year’s festival. |
More than 25 performances take place over the five days of the festival at Aberdeen’s top music venues: The Music Hall, The Lemon Tree, The Blue Lamp, The Tunnels and The Rusty Nail. The full programme can be found at the Jazz Aberdeen website.
The Lemon Tree Café is the venue for free lunchtime performances, starting at 12.30 pm, from Thursday to Sunday of the festival weekend. On Thursday and Friday young local talent is profiled in the AJF2006 Young Musician Showcase. This year’s Twin City Showcase brings together two bands from Aberdeen’s twin cities – the Kagerer Nieberle Guitar Duo from Regensburg in Germany, and Whip!, who hail from Stavanger in Norway. Performances take place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 March.
Young talent

 |
Furthering the cause of young talent this year, the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra makes its festival debut at the Blue Lamp on Saturday 11 March at 2.30 pm. The Alan Skidmore Quartet provide a taster to the festival on Thursday 2 March at 8:30pm at The Blue Lamp. Skidmore and his quartet will then lead an advanced jazz workshop the following day from 9.30 am – 12.30 pm at the Summerhill Education Centre. This event will focus on a small group of local jazz students developing their skills and increasing their appreciation of jazz styles. |
A broader workshop will run on the same day from 10.00 am – 4.00 pm, led by Richard Michael, one of Scotland’s foremost jazz educators. This session is open to all local young musicians of all abilities, but places are limited. Call 01224 619770 for an application form.

Now in its third year, the Aberdeen Jazz Festival is boosting the profile of jazz in the north-east of Scotland.
One of the festival’s great success stories, the Aberdeen Jazz Orchestra, was born out of the first festival in 2004, and provides the opening performance on Wednesday 8 March with guest singer Tina May. |
