Dundee Rep's Ensemble Company

The Dundee Rep is Scotland’s only resident ensemble company of actors.  September 1999 heralded the start of a project called ‘New Ways of Working’ in which Dundee Rep received unprecedented funding from the Lottery through the Scottish Arts Council, national and local trusts and members of the public.  Funding was for a full-time company of actors to be based at the Rep for a period of three years. The doors of the newly refurbished building reopened on one of the most ambitious experiments in Scottish theatre for many years. Keith Fleming in ‘If Destroyed True’; Courtesy: Dundee Rep

Dundee Rep’s resident company was born – a company of 14 talented actors, including three apprentices who would be with the company for the duration of one year, for every year of the project. Initially for a period of three years, ‘New Ways of Working’ allowed for an exciting creative process that transformed Dundee Rep into Scotland's premier producing theatre company and increased it's profile throughout the UK and internationally.

Under the artistic direction of James Brining and Dominic Hill, the Ensemble model has been further developed with a core company of familiar faces being supplemented by additional actors. The Ensemble continues to broaden the type of work it undertakes to help realise the potential of Scotland's most unique artistic resources.

Dundee Rep Ensemble will present three diverse productions in the first half of 2006. It will include the first ever co-production between The Rep’s The Ensemble and dance company (Scottish Dance Theatre) and shows touring to Japan and around Scotland.

Forthcoming: The Talented Mr Ripley and Telling Tales

The Talented Mr Ripley

Phyllis Nagy's play, adapted from the novel by Patricia Highsmith was presented by the Dundee Rep Ensemble at the Dundee Rep Theatre during March 2006.

Directed by Dominic Hill, this stylish thriller is a sinister exploration of passion, duplicity and murder. It was made into an award-winning film in 1999 and is now brought to seductive life by the team that brought you the Rep’s hit show The Graduate.

Telling Tales

A regular date for many local youngsters!  Dundee Rep Ensemble actors present Saturday morning storytelling sessions.  Tales of fun and adventure, sometimes silly and sometimes sad, but always a welcome treat.  Recommended age group: 5-8 years old.

These storytelling sessions will take place on Saturdays 1, 15 and 29 April 2006 at 11am in the Dundee Rep Theatre.

Forthcoming: Monkey

This is Dundee Rep Ensemble’s first ever collaboration with the Scottish Dance Theatre (the Rep’s dance company).  This production, by Colin Teevan, will also be performed as part of the Children’s International Theatre Festival in May run by Imaginate.

1,000 years ago in ancient China, a cheeky Monkey King roams the land with nothing on his mind but joking and playing. Born from an egg at the beginning of Time, mischievous Monkey is brave, heroic and cocky. One day he gets too big for his boots and disobeys Buddha, who locks him up in a mountain for 500 years to teach him patience.  Buddah gives him one more chance and sends him on a spiritual journey to help the holiest monk in the land and return sacred teachings.
A magical mix of dance, drama, martial arts, crazy encounters, bold humour, live musicians, a big cast of colourful characters and a healthy dose of Enlightenment, Monkey is a spectacular, action-adventure. This large-scale family show, co-directed by Dominic Hill and Janet Smith, is recommended for everyone from 8 years to 108.

Monkey runs from 10 to 20 May 2006.
