Scottish Dance Theatre’s new dance studio
Work is complete on Scottish Dance Theatre’s (SDT) new Dance Studio at Dundee Rep Theatre. SDT is unique in the UK as it is the only dance company based within a producing theatre. The reason for the development of a new on-site dance studio was to take advantage of this factor and help in the development of the cultural quarter of Dundee. The new studio was launched on 4 August 2004.

The Studio will enable SDT to work in an inspiring space which matches the company’s national status and growing reputation. The SDT Studio will provide Scottish Dance Theatre with : -
- a state-of-the-art, fully accessible working space with natural light. The vaulted ceiling will add a spacious, airy feel that will offer inspiration, supporting the creative process and encouraging excellence.
- male and female changing rooms
- three showers including a disabled facility
- a green room area
With its added facilities and space, the studio will enable SDT to open its doors to more students, graduates and dance professionals wishing to train with the company or attend workshops. Scottish Dance Theatre hopes to help with the transition from dance training into the profession and to train future choreographers from within the company. The new Dance Studio will help to actively encourage this.
The new Studio will enable SDT to expand its education programme in Dundee. It aims to increase the number of regular classes for members of the local community.
The £1m Studio has been made possible due to funding from the Scottish Arts Council National Lottery Fund, the Eastern Scotland European Partnership and local and national charitable trusts and foundations.
“I think everyone will be thrilled with the SDT Studio. It will provide a tremendous resource for the development of so many facets of our work and create a legacy of inspiration and possibility that we hope will reverberate far beyond its walls and for a long time to come.” Janet Smith, Artistic Director.
