Scottish Ballet's 'The Nutcracker'

After phenomenal success in 2003 at theatres up and down the country and across the Irish Sea, Scottish Ballet returned with Artistic Director Ashley Page's critically acclaimed version of The Nutcracker in 2004.

Ivanov's Nutcracker may have dusted some sugar over the top of this coming of age story but Page  returned to the story's origins for inspiration, and looked to the original of ETA Hoffman's creation for a more surrealist narrative to chart the young girl's awakening. All of this was enhanced by the superb sets, curious costumes and brilliant lighting of Anthony McDonald and Peter Mumford. The Scottish Ballet Orchestra performed the Tchaikovsky score.

Education programme

During 2004 Scottish Ballet's Education Programme created and toured work side-by-side with the main Company. A Day of Dance would allow 300 children from areas around Glasgow the opportunity to experience an introduction to dance under the watchful eyes and expert guidance of Scottish Ballet's Education Department. All participants received complimentary tickets for a performance of The Nutcracker at Glasgow's Theatre Royal, courtesy of Bank of Scotland.

Scottish Ballet's Education Unit is ten years old and over the years 110,000 children have benefited from its work.
