Proposals/submissions required for Moving On - a Dance Encounter in Glasgow

Moving On - An International Encounter
30 March 2009 at RSAMD, Glasgow

exploring, inspiring and celebrating the potential of dance and disability as a creative, educational, social and recreational tool.

Moving On will be a day of discussion and debate bringing together a diverse range of people to explore the richness of this constantly evolving and developing field of work. Moving On seeks to dissolve traditional boundaries within performance, pedagogy and research in dance and contemporary performance practice and discover new ways of moving on.

This encounter is being led by Dance House and Indepen-dance in collaboration with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama and Culture & Sport Glasgow. It will bring together national and international practitioners to focus on:

• Raising the status and profile of this body of work
• Developing a clearer understanding of the work
• Celebrating existing work and making new connections

Moving On will inform the developing plans for a major international festival in Glasgow in 2010.  On the agenda for the day will be issues surrounding:

• Understanding an Aesthetic
• Status and Profile
• Language of Critique
• Audiences
• Training
• Performance Opportunities

Proposals and submissions, responding to the above themes and issues, are welcomed. This could be an academic paper, a provocation, a workshop, a film, a short performance work, an improvisation, images/exhibition, an internet or mediated performance or your own ideas for presentation.

Arts Admin Traineeship with Dance House

for Individuals from Minority Ethnic Background Resident in Scotland

This traineeship is supported and funded by the Scottish Arts Council as part of its cultural diversity implementation strategy which recognizes that certain sectors of the community are under-represented in the arts workforce in Scotland.

The position will offer hands-on training opportunities in arts administration, arts programming, project & venue liaison and arts press & marketing to individuals of African, African-Caribbean, Asian or Chinese descent.

 As one of Scotland’s leading providers of high quality dance and dance related events and activities, Dance House is currently seeking individuals who would like to enhance the Governance of the Company with their HR, Legal, Marketing, or Architectural experience and knowledge.

 Dance House recently received Flexible Funding status from the Scottish Arts Council for 2009-2011 and over the next few months, the company will undergo a period of change and transformation.  It will be an exciting time for interested individuals to join the other Directors in guiding the company through this challenging process.

Gilmore Productions seeks Company Manager

Glasgow based dance theatre company - Gilmore Productions are looking for a Company Manager. You will co-ordinate the day to day running of the company working alongside the Artistic Director as well as planning for future developments.

Responsibilities include writing and distributing contracts to artists and venues; tour booking, including arrangements for tours; development of new projects and initiatives, securing funds, book keeping, writing reports to funders and board members. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and organisational skills, and have previous experience in planning and managing budgets. T

he post is for 2 days a week, with the potential to increase hours in the future as the company continues to expand.

Rate: £ 21,000 – £ 25,000 Pro rata.

Claire Cunningham - evolution at the Royal Opera House

21 & 22 November 2008 7.45pm

A biographical account of learning to live in a body...and of a body learning to dance.

As part of FIRSTS 2008, evolution is a powerful and mesmerising solo that challenges preconceptions of aesthetics and a body's perceived limitations. In a showcase of Cunningham's unique acrobatic dance style crafted around the subtle and skilful use of her crutches, she glides across the floor and  twists through majestic, balletic and dextrous sequences. evolution earned Cunningham a Best Female performer nomination at the Dublin Fringe Festival 2007.

Call for Artists to deliver a Residency Project - Northumbria University & Dance City

 The residency will take place between February - April 2009

Artists of all genres are invited to deliver creative and practical sessions for students that explore aspects of your artform practice and facilitate the development of your students' own practice.

Your proposal should include:

  • your CV
  • your idea for the residency (100 words max)
  • examples of activities you may do to explore this area
  • an indication of your preferred dates for working

The hours are negotiable and will be for a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 60. Contracts will be issued by Dance City.

Scottish Ballet announce promotions

Scottish Ballet is pleased to announce that Sophie Martin, Tama Barry and Adam Blyde have all been promoted from Soloist to Principal, while Vassilissa Levtonova has been promoted from Artist to Coryphee.

Sophie Martin joined the Scottish Ballet in 2003 and has performed in a number of high profile roles, including her recent lead role in Pastor’s Romeo and Juliet.  Sophie is featured as the poster girl for The Sleeping Beauty, Scottish Ballet’s decadent winter production beginning in November.

Adam Blyde also joined the Company in 2003 performing as, the prince and Bluebird in Page’s The Sleeping Beauty, among many other roles.

Since joining in 2006, Tama Barry has danced significant character roles in Scottish Ballet’s award winning repertoire, including recently dancing in the roles of Romeo and Tybalt in Pastor’s Romeo and Juliet.

Vassilisa Levtonova joined the Company in 2003 and has danced a variety of high profile roles.  She is currently the poster girl for Scottish ballet’s Autumn Tour.

All dancers are now appearing during Scottish Ballet’s Autumn Tour. 

International Physical Theatre Laboratory

To apply for participation, candidates should email a CV and a brief letter of motivation stating the title, dates and place of the event.  The Lab will take place in Ystad, a historical Swedish town situated at the southern point of Sweden on the Baltic Sea.  During the Lab accommodation and meals are provided for participants.

SWAN Day Berlin

SWAN Day Berlin 2009, or Support Women Artists Now Day, is a four-day festival featuring performance, installations, music, a short film program, workshops, discussions and an Open Space.  The festival will be presented by performance Lab Berlin and will run from the 26th – 29th March 2009.  All women artists of all disciplines are invited to apply for participation in the festival SWAN Day Berlin 2009.  Participating artists will receive payment.

Female artists of all disciplines are invited to submit work of up to ten minutes long; excerpts of longer works also accepted.  In order to be eligible, the driving creative force behind the work submitted (the choreographer, director, playwright, composer, etc) must be a woman.

Project Y

Project Y is a performance company for young dancers aged between 16 and 21 which takes place over 4 weeks each summer. It is aimed at young dancers with a passion for dance who are considering progressing to professional dance training. Participants explore a range of contemporary dance styles, work with some of the UK’s best choreographers and in the final week tour arts venues across Scotland with a selection of innovative new dance works. Application packs are generally available from October and auditions take place in February/March.

China-UK Connections through Culture

Are you looking to create links with Chinese Arts Organisations, unsure how to get started, or need guidance on how to over come bureaucratic hurdles to further develop links already established? Connections through Culture could be just the scheme for you.

China — UK Connections through Culture is a joint initiative between the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the British Council with support from the Scottish Government.  The initiative offers support, information, advice, networking opportunities and development grants to cultural organisations in China and the UK, aiming to build relationships and to develop exciting cultural collaborations between organisations in the two countries.

There is a website which contains a searchable database of organisational profiles and interests. All cultural organisations in the UK and China can register on the database to enable potential partner organisations to make contact.

Dance Leadership course

Youth Scotland are looking for young women aged 16 to 24 years old with an interest in physical activity and dance to take part in a five day residential Dance Leadership Course.

The course is practical and challenging but most of all fun - mixing skills training and personal development with social activities. Applicants don't have to be dancers - but should have an interest in leading dance for girls and young women in their local community. The course will enable young women to gain a nationally recognised qualification in dance leadership.

Dance Base needs your inspirational true stories

Anyone who has ever taken a dance class knows just how much fun they are, and how much fitter, healthier and happier they can make you feel. Dance Base, Scotland's National Centre for Dance, is looking for your stories about how dance changed your life, to feature in their next brochure.

Maybe you found a new lease of life at a tap class? Met your husband or wife doing Tango? Or were inspired to travel through flamenco? The story can be anecdotal, sentimental or just downright ridiculous - so long as its true. Submitting a story is easy - just email it to James Allenby, and if Dance Base decides to use it in their Autumn brochure, you will receive a free class voucher for use during the Edinburgh Fringe.

Media Arts and Imaging MSc - Screendance

The first decade of the 21st century sees the convergence of dance and the moving image manifested in many different forms and contexts, from single screen video dance works to pop promos, documentation to feature films, live performance with technology and net dance. All require a technical and critical understanding of and experience in both dance and the media arts.

This brand new strand of a well-established and respected Masters programme enables students to develop advanced skills, knowledge and understanding within the rapidly expanding field of screendance and is also designed to prepare graduates as skilled professionals in the video arts, film and television sectors.

The flexible programme offers a wide range of opportunities for individuals to develop both practical and theoretical skills. The Programme aims to address the demand for directors, choreographers and screendance artists with the technical expertise and creative vision needed to support specialisms in the commercial and arts sectors.

The School of Media Arts and Imaging has excellent high-end shooting, graphics, animation and editing facilities for use by students and supported by highly experienced technical staff. The Masters has a dedicated Course Leader and this strand is supported by internationally renowned screendance artists and guest lecturers from the field.

The curriculum is designed to attract graduates from courses in dance, choreography, screen arts, animation, net arts and interactive media, as well as those in professional careers who wish to focus on developing their personal practice.
