Established in 1988, YDance (Scottish Youth Dance) is the National Youth Dance Agency for Scotland. The Company exists to offer children and young people aged 3 to 21 the opportunity to realise their potential as individuals and to learn and grow through participation in dance. YDance provides a year-round programme of workshops, residencies, performance projects and collaborations in schools, youth and arts organisations all over Scotland. |
YDance began as an annual Summer School for teenagers and has since grown into a year-round operation, employing 20 full-time members of staff with ongoing projects in local authorities across Scotland and beyond. |
The company delivers dance projects and workshops, in-service training for teachers and has also produced the first interactive dance CD-ROMs - a resource for teachers and youth leaders who are interested in working with dance.
The Dance in Schools Initiative was funded by the Scottish Executive Health Improvement Strategy Division as part of their Physical Activity Strategy and rolled out across 31 Local Authority areas in Scotland over a three year period. It involved 234,817 young people from 732 schools from as far a field as the Scottish Borders to the Shetland Isles. |
The initiative also worked to ensure that teachers had the necessary skills, experience and resources to ensure sustainability of dance in schools at the end of the project through an in-service training programme and the provision of interactive dance CD-ROMs - AnyBodyCanDance (for ages 8 – 14) and the BAFTA-nominated 321Go! (for ages 4-7).
